The time has come!  Rumors about Fox launching an animated Napoleon Dynamite series have been in the air since October 2010 and now the cult film has officially gone to the toons.  Last night, a first look trailer for the Napoleon Dynamite cartoon was quietly uploaded to the Fox Broadcasting YouTube channel and it’s just starting to take off this morning.  But the response may not be as positive as Fox had hoped for…

According to the trailer, and the Napoleon Dynamite info page on Facebook, the animated series brings back all your favorite Napoleon Dynamite characters, voiced by the original actors.  Jon Heder is back as Napoleon Dynamite, Aaron Ruell as Kip, Efren Ramirez as Pedro, Tina Majorino as Deb, John Gries as Uncle Rico, Sandy Martin as Grandma and Diedrich Bader as Rex.  The plot, as outlined on Facebook, is based on the hit cult film.  “Napoleon Dynamite is an animated series that follows the continuing adventures of America’s most awesome awkward teenager and his quirky family and friends as they struggle to navigate small-town life in rural Idaho.”

But will Napoleon Dynamite be the hit that Fox hopes it will be?  I guess that only time will tell.  I, for one, am excited to see anything related to Napoleon Dynamite (I’m a huge fan…of ligers, Pedro and the whole gang).  However, the outlook isn’t so good on Twitter, where the show has amassed a mere 80 followers so far; on Facebook, where they’ve garnered 160 likes; and on YouTube, where over one third of people ranking the video “dislike” it and a comment about how bad the show is going to be has gotten over 100 thumbs up.

But perhaps it’s just too soon to tell.  After all, it’s only been 20 hours since Napoleon Dynamite the animated series hit the social web.  Check out the video below and judge for yourself.  Oh, and be sure to let us know what you think in the comments!
