Facebook rolled out a Web version of its Messenger application Wednesday, but the social network has no plans to remove messaging functions from its website as it did for its mobile apps last year.
Vice president of messaging David Marcus announced the launch in a Facebook post:
We’re excited to bring you a dedicated desktop experience with the launch of Messenger.com. Check it out and, as always, let us know how we can make it better for you!
A Facebook spokesperson told Re/code the motivation behind a Web version of Messenger is to accommodate users who want to focus solely on messaging, and not on Facebook’s other features, such as News Feed, adding that the social network has no plans to remove messaging from its core service.
According to Re/code, Messenger.com is available to English-speaking users globally as of Wednesday, and other languages will be added “in the coming weeks.” Re/code also reported that recently added Messenger features, such as payments and third-party apps, will be supported by the Web version of the service.
