Make Your Own Android Live Wallpaper

One of the cool features that Google added in Android 2.1 is live wallpaper. If you are not familiar with live wallpaper, it is an animated background that displays across all of the Android home screens. Several different live wallpapers ship in Android 2.1 and 2.2, but if you want more you can search for “live wallpaper” in the Android Market.

If you want to make your own live wallpaper it looks like a tool called Ownskin UGC is being created. The developer of Ownskin posted a message on the XDA-Developers forum showing screenshots of some live wallpaper they created with the tool, and including a link to an apk file that contains those wallpapers that you can install on your phone.

To install the wallpaper on your phone you will need to enable the ability allow installation of non-Market applications by tapping Menu, Settings, Applications, and checking the Unknown Sources checkbox. You will then need to mount your phone to a PC and copy the file apk file to the storage card. Finally, you will need a program like Astro to open the storage card and install by tapping on the apk file name.

The message about Ownskin on the XDA-Developers forum also includes a YouTube video that provides information about how the wallpaper was created and briefly showing the tool that they are developing. Unfortunately no information is provided about the authoring tool, but if you are interested in getting a copy of your own you may want to follow the message thread.
