Konami brings Blockolicious to Facebook from iOS

Today, Konami’s bringing the puzzle game Blockolicious over from iOS to Facebook.

Blockolicious is a gem-matching game, with two different gameplay modes: “Sprint” and “Marathon.” Sprint has players attempting to rack up a high score within two minutes, while Marathon doesn’t contain a time limit and instead requires players to level up within a certain number of moves. Players can also take advantage of power-ups to destroy extra blocks; more of these power-ups are unlocked with in-game game gold (which can be earned through play or purchased), but some require players to meet certain gameplay milestones to access.

When games expand to another platform it’s usually from Facebook to mobile devices, unlike Blockolicious which was originally released on Apple’s Appstore in February. Although it was developed by Hibernum Creations, the mobile version of the game was published by Electronic Arts’s mobile subsidiary Chillingo. EA didn’t pick up the Facebook rights and Konami snatched them up.

The gem-matching genre is a crowded one, both on mobile and social platforms. That said, Wooga’s Diamond Dash and PopCap’s Bejeweled Blitz are two of the top 15 games on Facebook by daily active users, with 3.6 million DAU and 2.5 million respectively. Blockolicious could have a tough time getting anywhere close to these numbers, as our AppData traffic-tracking service shows the game isn’t on any of iTunes’s charts. However, Konami’s been making a noticeable push into the social arena of late (partnering with Zynga and recently launching Puzzle Chasers on Facebook), so it will undoubtedly help Blockolicious to receive some cross-promotion under the company’s banner.
