Shankman Using Klout to Help With Party Guest List

According to the press release for his holiday party, the guests joining Peter Shankman at Hudson Terrace next Wednesday are “movers and shakers of the social media world” who have been selected for their “social media influence and engagement.”

These VIPs have been determined by Klout, the site that scores Web influencers, Shankman says in the release. However, a spokesperson for Shankman told us that it’s not about the Klout  score necessarily, but rather the level of engagement and what these guests are talking about that’s important to the sponsors.

According to the press release, The Venetian and The Palazzo in Las Vegas and Jet Blue (which is flying people in) are among the sponsors of this event. We spoke with Julie Smith, PR manager at Haworth, an office furniture and design company that’s also a sponsor, told us that social media is still a mystery to many in this space. So, this is a chance to meet with “leaders and future leaders.” (Shankman has been working with Haworth as a social media consultant for about a year, Smith said.)

“When Peter proposed this idea to us, we were actually more interested in hooking up with Klout as a company and the people they measured,” she said.

So really, it’s less a holiday party and more a networking event that’s happening during the holiday season.

The Bad-Pitch Blog sounds off on just about everything in the press release in an open letter to Peter Shankman, admitting they weren’t invited. (RLM PR and HARO worked together for a short time last year.) We’ll be there, so we’ll let you know how it goes.
