If Starwood’s Customers Tap Uber This Weekend, They Could Get a Free Night’s Stay

Hotel brand looks to ride-sharing app to boost loyalty perks

Starwood Hotels & Resorts has inked a deal with ride-sharing app Uber so that people can earn loyalty points for booking cab rides.

The partnership is part of the hotel giant's Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) membership program, which lets frequent travelers earn points for staying at Starwood's nine chains (which include W, Westin, St. Regis and Sheraton). To participate, members first need to register their account online and book at least one stay per year at a Starwood property.

After linking their SPG account, Uber riders automatically start earning one membership point for each dollar spent. People who book Uber rides while also staying at a Starwood property at the same time earn bonus points.

To kick off the partnership, Starwood is launching a social effort called #SuiteRide on Saturday in New York, San Francisco, Dubai, Mexico City and London. Souped-up Uber cars in these cities will be equipped with LED mood lighting, fresh flowers and Wi-Fi, among other features. Consumers can earn 15,000 points for a ride—equivalent to a one-night stay at Starwood properties including Four Points, Sheraton and The Westin.

"It is especially satisfying for us at Starwood to be partnering with a cutting edge and innovative pioneer like Uber," said Starwood Hotels & Resorts CEO Adam Aron in a statement. "It is truly impressive to see how Uber has revolutionized transportation for the better."

Starwood isn't the only brand tying loyalty perks into the Uber app. Last year, American Express integrated its Membership Rewards program into the app so that people can pay for their rides with points.
