Government Executive Media Group Names President and EVP/EiC

PrintEarlier today, National Journal Group CEO Tim Hartman named Constance Sayers Witherspoon president of Government Executive Media Group and Tom Shoop its executive vice president and editor in chief. Owned by Atlantic Media, the group comprises Government Executive, Defense One, and Nextgov, among other topically focused news outlets.

In 2013, Sayers Witherspoon was named publisher of Government Executive Media Group. Shoop has served as editor in chief of since 2007.

Washington, DC; April 24, 2014 – National Journal Group CEO Tim Hartman today named Constance Sayers Witherspoon president of Government Executive Media Group and Tom Shoop executive vice president and editor in chief of the brand.

“Connie’s deep understanding of the public sector combined with her natural leadership talents make her an ideal choice to steward Government Executive’s expansion as we continue our move into the defense and state and local arenas,” said Mr. Hartman. “Essential to Government Executive’s transformation and growth, Tom led the transition to a world-class digital editorial operation and played a central role in defining our hugely successful new brands, including Nextgov and Defense One.”

In her new role, Ms. Sayers Witherspoon will lead the growth strategy for Government Executive Media Group, which also includes the award winning Defense One brand as well as oversee all operations including sales, marketing, audience development, digital, and editorial.

Sayers Witherspoon has been serving as Publisher of Government Executive Media Group since 2013 and previously led marketing and events for the brand from 2000–2006. During this period she was responsible for producing the Excellence in Government Conference, Excellence in Government West, and the Service to America Medals Gala. From 2006-2008, she led National Journal’s efforts for the 2008 political conventions. After spending two years at CQ Roll Call, Sayers Witherspoon re-joined Atlantic Media in 2010 as vice president of National Journal LIVE, which she created and grew into a multi-million dollar events business. In 2011 she was promoted to Associate Publisher for National Journal, before returning to Government Executive Media Group. Early in her career, Sayers Witherspoon led the marketing efforts for various non-profit organizations, including The Food and Drug Law Institute and The American Society for Training and Development.

In his expanded role, Tom Shoop will work closely with Sayers Witherspoon to lead the expansion of Government Executive Media Group’s digital brands, including Defense One and editorial teams. Shoop will guide the launch of Government Executive’s state and local expansion in 2014 and going forward will help set the company’s strategic growth vision and priorities for launching new brands and entering new markets. He will lead the brand’s growing editorial enterprise to ensure continued delivery of distinctive, best-in-class coverage of the markets and effectively meet the evolving information needs of the brand’s key audiences.
