Glad to Finally Get Skype mobile for Verizon Wireless But Wondering if it Has Jumped the Shark

I was finally able to download

Verizon Wireless with Skype mobile

on my Droid last night. However, I have to admit I was still a bit puzzled about its rules of the road even after reading an explantion of one of the service’s quirks in this Skype blog item:

Skype mobile for Verizon Wireless available from Thursday

The qurik is that Skype-to-Skype calls are made over Verizon Wireless’ voice network. Skype states that this does NOT incur charges against your data plan or use up voice minutes. But, it was still odd for me to see my Droid ask if I wanted to use Verizon or Google Voice to make a Skype call.

The other oddity is not described in the blog item and is even more mystifying: Skype calls can only be made using Verizon Wireless’ 3G network. It will not work over a WiFi connection. This exactly the opposite of the rules governing Skype on the iPhone (and AT&T Wireless).

Looks like a mini-podcast with a Skype mobile for Wireless sound sample will be coming your way here in the near future.
