Four Free Map Apps for the Kindle Fire

Barnes & Noble announced today that the Nook Tablet was getting its first map app, and in the not too distant future it's also going to get location based apps. As cool as this was, it got me wondering what you could do with the Kindle Fire. As you know, the KF doesn't have Google Play. But it does have a number of map apps listed in the Amazon Appstore, and I also found several free apps available online. MapQuest - There's a reason why so many people rely on MapQuest. All you have to do is type in your starting and end address, and you'll quickly get very accurate, turn-by-turn directions. But MapQuest offers much more than just directions. You can plan your route, add stops to your trip, get detailed street maps of your destination, and find helpful services along the way--such as the lowest gas prices, the best hotels, even the best pizza. MapsWithMe - Ever needed a map urgently but lacked a mobile network connection? Or been traveling abroad and afraid to use maps because of the extortionate roaming charges? MapsWithMe solves all your offline mapping requirements. Download cities, regions or entire countries of your choice on any of your Android devices. Because the data is stored locally, you will never have to worry about hidden roaming charges or the quality of your network data connection again. And of course, you will always be able to find where you are with the GPS positioning and compass. The map data comes from the open source initiative Open Street Map and is evolving every day. MapDroyd - Of course, today there are many Android application featuring street maps. Most of them are based on Google Maps, which means you've to enable your device's network connection through a GPRS or Wifi connection.
