Facebook Places Comes To Canada As App Market Heats Up

Canada is the latest country to get Facebook Places, the fourth market after the U.S., Japan and Britain.

We received a tip from a reader that Places was live in Canada earlier today and reports in the Canadian press back this up. The news comes a few days after the Canadian Privacy Commissoner cleared Facebook’s privacy changes in May.

Places, Facebook’s version of a location check-in service, first launched in the U.S. in August. Japan and the UK followed last week and Australia is tipped to get it “soon”.

Meanwhile, developers have been busy building on the Places API. We reported earlier this week that location check-in game SCVNGR had released some tools for Place Page owners. We also wrote about the check-in data visualization tool from WeePlaces and the Places data organization tools from PlacePop.

Today Ireland-based developer Betapond released two Facebook apps, on the back of the UK launch last week. The first is LoyaltyBuilder, which offers branded multi-venue check-ins that might be useful for retail chains or brands doing a location-based game activation. Betapond plans to offer the basics as a self-service package but intends to build bespoke apps for more sophisticated mechanics, with more possibilities once the WriteAPI opens up. The second app from Betapond is I Spy Places, which lets users track more information about their own check-ins or friends’ check-ins than the generic Places service.
