Facebook Is Welcoming Youths Through the Doors of Its Digital Literacy Library

The social network teamed up with Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society

The lessons were developed for educators of youths age 11 through 18

Facebook Thursday unveiled a collection of resources aimed at helping young people get the most out of digital technology and stay safe while doing it.

The social network teamed up with the Youth and Media team at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University on the Digital Literacy Library, which makes ready-to-use lessons from Berkman Klein available globally and free-of-charge under a Creative Commons license.

The lessons draw on more than 10 years of academic research by the Youth and Media team, and they were developed for educators of youths age 11 through 18.

Facebook global head of safety Antigone Davis and global safety programs manager Karuna Nain said in a Newsroom post that the lessons “reflect the voices of young people from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, ethnicities, geographies and educational levels. The lessons address thematic areas such as privacy and reputation, identity exploration, security, safety and wellbeing and more.”

A total of 18 lessons are currently available in English, with 45 additional languages coming soon, and they can be downloaded free-of-charge via Facebook’s Safety Center and Berkman Klein’s Digital Literacy Resource Platform.

Davis and Nain said the social network is working with nonprofits globally to adapt the existing lessons and create new ones for use worldwide.
