Another application from the Facebook NPE Team was spotted in Canada, and this one’s a Whale.
Whale is a meme-creation app available for iOS users in Canada.
According to the app’s listing in the iTunes App Store, users can either take a photo or choose one from their camera roll or from a library of stock images.
Text, images, emojis, filters and other effects including laser eyes, vortex and bulge can be added to turn that image into a meme, with customization options for font and color, as well as a freeform draw tool.
Users can also select blank, two-grid, three-grid or four-grid canvas layouts.
Memes can then be shared via social media or conversations in messaging apps.
The first listing under features is an odd one, since Facebook does not charge users of any of its apps: “No distractions or hidden premium subscription fees.”
Facebook declined to provide further details on Whale.
Earlier this month, two more apps surfaced from the Facebook NPE Team:
- Bump, available for iOS and Android in Canada and the Philippines, facilitates conversations between people who don’t know each other by enabling them to start with conversation topics chosen by both parties, and conversations are plain text—no images, videos or links.
- And Aux, available only on iOS and only in Canada, is described as a “DJ for Your School.”
The social network formed its NPE Team—the NPE stands for New Product Experimentation—in July, with the aim of creating new consumer-focused apps and features, saying at the time that the purpose behind the initiative was to determine whether people found features useful or engaging, potentially helping to inform its product strategy going forward.
