Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz leads World Series buzz on Facebook

The Boston Red Sox claimed the World Series title over the St. Louis Cardinals, but Boston’s team also got the win on Facebook. According to Facebook, there were more than 32 million interactions about the Red Sox by more than 11 million people during the World Series. The most popular athlete? Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz, who was named World Series MVP.

Facebook released a list of the most-talked about athletes during the World Series, noting that Ortiz was talked about four times more than any other player:

  1. David Ortiz (DH/1B, Boston)
  2. David Ross (C, Boston)
  3. Jon Lester (P, Boston)
  4. Carlos Beltran (OF, St. Louis)
  5. Will Middlebrooks (3B, Boston)
  6. Jonny Gomes (OF, Boston)
  7. Michael Wacha (P, St. Louis)
  8. Dustin Pedroia (2B, Boston)
  9. Mike Napoli (1B, Boston)
  10. Stephen Drew (SS, Boston)

The Red Sox out-buzzed the Cardinals 62 percent to 38 percent in terms of Facebook chatter, and men did most of the talking throughout the Series. Here are the top 5 demographics:

  1. Men 25-34
  2. Men 35-44
  3. Men 18-24
  4. Men 45-54
  5. Women 25-34

Naturally, the Red Sox home state of Massachusetts hosted the most Facebook discussion, with the Cardinals’ Missouri coming in second. However, lots of Californians also posted on Facebook during the World Series. Here’s the top 10 states, in terms of Facebook buzz:

  2. Missouri
  3. California
  4. Illinois
  5. New York
  6. Florida
  7. New Jersey
  8. Pennsylvania
  9. Connecticut
  10. New Hampshire
