Apple Rejects Sony App, Kindle & Nook Beware

Apple doesn’t want people buying content from within apps anymore. The New York Times is reporting that Apple has rejected Sony’s iPhone app, because they don’t want users to be able to purchase eBooks from the Sony eReader Store from within the app.

The New York Times has more: “The company has told some applications developers, including Sony, that they can no longer sell content, like e-books, within their apps, or let customers have access to purchases they have made outside the App Store…Apple told Sony that from now on, all in-app purchases would have to go through Apple, said Steve Haber, president of Sony’s digital reading division.”

This rejection could be a direct play against Amazon’s Kindle app or Barnes & Noble’s Nook apps, both of which sell eBooks directly. It might also give publishers considering releasing eBook titles through their own branded apps, a reason to hold off.
