Amazon to Stream TV, Movies from 20th Century Fox

Amazon continues to play catch-up-to-Netflix, and today it announced that it had a new deal with 20th Century Fox. Amazon customers with Amazon Prime memberships can now stream any of hundreds of Fox movies and TV shows, including Mrs. Doubtfire, Doctor Dolittle, Last of the Mohicans, Office Space and All About Eve. they’ll also be able to watch for free such  series as 24, The X-Files, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, NYPD Blue, Arrested Development, and Ally McBeal.

“We have received very positive feedback from Prime members about Prime instant videos. Customers love the instant access to thousands of movie and TV favorites,” said Steve Oliver, director of Video at Amazon.com. “Since the launch of Prime instant videos in February, we have more than doubled the library to 11,000 titles and will continue to add more of our customers’ favorite movies and TV shows to Prime instant videos.”

This new deal brings Amazon’s free streaming video service to around 11,000 TV episodes and movies. Note that most of these TV series and movies are already available through Netflix.

While this might look like a good addition to Amazon’s selection, the fact remains that Amazon still lags behind Netflix both in terms of selection and service. I have used Amazon Instant Video quite a bit over the past weekend (it had a show I wanted to catch up on), and it truly is not as easy to use as Netflix. Until Amazon works to improve the user experience  it will likely always lag behind Netflix.
