After an elongated and unpredictable back-to-school shopping season in 2020, consumers are celebrating the return to in-person classes this year with open wallets.
How much they’re spending
According to a survey from professional services firm Deloitte, total back-to-school spend will reach $32.5 billion this year—or an average of $612 per child. That’s an increase of 16% over 2020 when shoppers spent about $529 per child for a total of $28.1 billion.
Deloitte attributed the increase to consumer “confidence and clarity,” which the report noted is bringing “a sense of normalcy to the upcoming school year.”
What they’re buying
Continuing a trend we saw in 2020, the increase in spend comes in part as parents buy more tech-enabled school supplies.
