Telemundo Buys Studio, Distributor

NEW YORK Telemundo has acquired full ownership of Telemundo-RTI Productions and has agreed to purchase the operating assets of Tepuy International, the network’s current foreign distributor. The first will operate as the newly created Telemundo Studios Miami, with an in-house international division to be called Telemundo Internacional after the completed purchase of Tepuy.

Don Browne, president of Telemundo, also made top-level appointments of two established business partners: Patricio Wills, former head of Telemundo-RTI, has been named president of Telemundo Television Studios, and Marcos Santana, previously president and COO of Tepuy, will be president of Telemundo Internacional. Wills will be responsible for all in-house development as well as production in Mexico and Colombia, while Santana will help to expand programming distribution to other parts of the world. Both will report to Browne.

“Taking full ownership of our Miami studios and our foreign distribution capabilities gives us great leverage in the industry to really manage our own destiny and competitively position Telemundo for future growth,” said Browne, in announcing the move. “Patricio and Marcos have been an essential part of the talented team that has shaped our success today, and we are delighted to have both of them as part of our NBC Telemundo family.”

The new deals will allow Telemundo Studios Miami to focus not only on U.S.-produced novelas and other shows but a chance for more programming opportunities with other broadcasters, including more co-production projects around the world.

In April, Telemundo formed a partnership with Mexico City-based Grupo Xtra’s Palmas 26 to produce more programming from Mexico.
