Publicis Names Klues Media CEO

NEW YORK Jack Klues, worldwide chief executive officer of Starcom MediaVest Group, has been named chairman of Publicis Groupe Media.

In this new post, he adds oversight for all of the holding company’s media agency networks, including ZenithOptimedia, which previously reported separately to Publicis Groupe senior management.

Stepping into Klues’ former job is Renetta McCann, who has been SMG’s CEO of the Americas, a position that will not be filled. In addition to Starcom and MediaVest, SMG brands include GM Planworks, the buying and planning shop dedicated to General Motors, and Starlink.

Publicis Groupe CEO Maurice Lévy credited Klues with making SMG the agency it is today, adding that Klues “will now be able to leverage the power of SMG and ZenithOptimedia to develop strategies which further enhance our competitive advantage.”

He praised McCann as “the natural choice for the top job at SMG.”

Klues, 50 has been at the helm of SMG since the 2000 merger of Starcom and MediaVest, a union he helped to orchestrate. McCann ran Starcom before her August 2004 appointment as CEO of the Americas at SMG.

The moves solidify at Publicis Groupe the “holding company within a holding company” model for media operations embraced by the other global agency concerns. At WPP Group, Irwin Gotlieb, as CEO of Group M, oversees all of the company’s media brands. Omnicom and Interpublic have similar models, with Daryl Simm serving as CEO of Omnicom Media Group and Mark Rosenthal installed as CEO of IPG Media.
