DALLAS Motorola is evaluating agencies to handle the advertising account of its semiconductor unit, which is planning to spin off into a publicly traded company, sources said.

A consultant is not involved. An undetermined number of agencies will begin presenting to the Austin, Texas-based unit this week, sources said.

The client could not be reached for comment.

Billings are undisclosed. WPP Group’s Ogilvy & Mather in New York is Motorola’s lead agency. The Schaumburg, Ill.-based client spent $38 million on media last year, mostly promoting its cell phones, with little going toward its semiconductors, according to Nielsen Monitor-Plus.
