McQuoid, Overall Leave TBWA\C\D

NEW YORK Two group creative directors at TBWA\Chiat\Day have left the agency to pursue directing careers, the agency confirmed.

Simon McQuoid and Richard Overall, both group creative directors and creative partners, left the New York agency last week. Others will absorb their duties in the creative department, said an agency representative.

They had been at the agency for five years, working on accounts including Nextel, Samsonite, Masterfoods and Circuit City. Most recently, they were one of the creative teams working on the “Nextel. Done.” campaign, which broke in September. One ad in that series showed actors using Nextel’s “push-to-talk” feature to perform an abbreviated “Romeo and Juliet.”

“Over the years, we worked with some really good directors, and as we did that we were learning a lot, and thinking more and more that [directing] was something we could do,” Overall said.

McQuoid, 35 and Overall, 39, will be represented by Go Film in New York in the U.S. and Window Productions in Sydney, Australia. They have directed two Samsonite ads at Go Film in New York for TBWA\C\D, both of which broke earlier this year. “Human Nature,” which broke in July, showed people testing things—the temperature of a pool, the likelihood of rain outside a tent—and ended with a Samsonite backpack being tested for strength. They also directed a Unicef ad, which ran last year, featuring Cal Ripken Jr.

Though the directing team doesn’t have any jobs lined up yet, “We’ve gotten good response to the reel,” Overall said. “Boards are coming in. I’ve got my fingers crossed that we won’t be having to direct wedding videos too soon.”

Originally from Australia, McQuoid, an art director, and Overall, a copywriter, came stateside to join Clarity Coverdale Fury in Minneapolis in 1995. They completed a stint at Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulous in Boston beginning in 1997, working with clients including Cellular One of Rhode Island, before moving on to TBWA\C\D in 1998.
