Building the agency’s fledgling political practice is among the goals Joni Williams has set for herself as she assumes leadership of 38-year-old independent media shop Kelly, Scott & Madison.

The Chicago agency continues to be retail-oriented, with clients such as airline carrier ATA and Shoe Carnival. But Williams, 44, formerly evp of business development, said she believes the retail experience translates well to the fast pace of political work.

“If you’re a retail shop, you’re used to changing [media plans] for 40 markets tomorrow,” she said.

Williams took over as president last week from KSM founder Leonard Cohen, 65, who is scaling back his workload.
