Expedia Meets With Shops

LOS ANGELES Expedia.com is meeting with at least four agencies this week in the review of its estimated $170 million ad account, according to sources.

WPP Group’s Berlin Cameron United in New York, Omnicom Group’s TBWA\Chiat\Day in Playa del Rey, Calif., Interpublic Group’s McCann Erickson in New York and independent Doner in Southfield, Mich., are pursuing the business, along with undisclosed others, per sources.

Robert Nelson, the client’s acting vice president of branding and segmentation, confirmed a cut last week to a list of “semifinalists” but declined to name them.

Agency officials either could not be reached or declined comment.

Nelson said the client would maintain “a schedule that calls for a decision on finalists in the early part of July.”

Expedia has parted with IPG’s Deutsch/LA in Marina del Rey, Calif., which handled both creative and media for the client since its inception seven years ago [Adweek Online, May 18].

The agency’s recent ads for the online travel service have been tagged, “Enjoy your trip.”

Sources said the decision to hold a review is based at least in part on the company’s recent lackluster financial performance.
