Donovan Makes Future Moves

Stratus Account Seen as Vehicle to Impact Boston Market
BOSTON–Donovan Group executives believe the newly won Stratus Computer will become a signature account. The shop last week announced it had been named agency of record for the Maynard, Mass.-based company after a review of undisclosed agencies.
“It was the best combination of creative and project management I’ve ever seen,” said
Jon Olson, Stratus corporate communications director.
Stratus executives brought in Northborough, Mass.-based Donovan in April on a project basis.
Ascend Communications, with backing from Investcorp, which also holds equity stakes in Gucci and Saks, spun off Stratus as an independent company earlier this year.
A business-to-business campaign, tagged “The world’s most reliable servers,” is scheduled to break next month. Billings were estimated by Olson in the seven-figure range.
“I think this will be our signature account moving forward, one that will be fast-growing,” said agency president Michael Donovan.
That sentiment should dovetail with Donovan’s ambitious goal: to continue to grow the 11-year-old agency 20 percent to 30 percent a year, organically and by acquiring an interactive or pr shop or both.
“We are debt-free” and ready to leverage our balance sheet to buy additional resources where needed, Donovan said during an interview at his office, spread over 10,000 square feet in Northborough’s former town hall.
Within two years, the agency plans to relocate to Boston. “Because we are 35 miles west, we are not coming up on the radar screen,” Donovan explained.
Joining the agency’s management team today to build the public relations department is Wendie Walsh. She takes over the four-person department from Don Goncalves, who resigned last month to become director of public relations and investor relations at online retailer Furniture.com.
“I think there is a great opportunity here for the agency and for me to bring public relations front and center,” Walsh said.
Walsh was previously director of client services at Creamer Dickson Basford in Westwood, Mass., where she worked with Goncalves before he joined Donovan.
Though Furniture.com in Framingham, Mass., hired Bartle Bogle Hegarty in New York as lead creative agency, Donovan [Group] will work on projects for the site, Donovan said.
