Compass Bank Picks GSD&M

LOS ANGELES Omnicom Group’s GSD&M Idea City has won the creative duties on the $10 million account of Compass Bank, according to the agency.

“Compass is a well-positioned player in a challenging industry,” said GSD&M Idea City president and COO Duff Stewart in a statement. “We are impressed by their people and their approach and look forward to helping them grow their business and achieve their goals.”

The verdict follows a review without a consultant held over the summer. MDC Partners’ Crispin Porter + Bogusky is the incumbent, though the agency declined to defend after it learned of the merger, according to a CP+B rep.

Contenders, according to sources, included WPP Group’s Grey and Havas’ Euro RSCG. The agencies declined comment or could not be reached.

Creative will be assigned to senior vice presidents and group creative directors Brent Ladd and Steve Miller, formerly on the Southwest Airlines and BMW accounts. The first work is expected in the first quarter of 2009.

“GSD&M brings deep experience in connecting with customers and in helping energize and grow organizations,” said Mark Gibson, evp, CMO for Birmingham, Ala.-based Compass in a statement. “They are the perfect partner for the plan we have in place.”

The Austin, Texas, agency will rebrand the bank to BBVA Compass to reflect the purchase of the institution by BBVA Group of Spain earlier in the year.

Media was unaffected by the review. It is held by MPG, Boston.
