Alltel Solicits User Mobile Videos

NEW YORK Alltel Wireless has kicked off a campaign that solicits consumer-generated video clips from cell phones.

The Little Rock, Ark., wireless network provider is running a contest on AtomFilms that will award prizes for the best videos of family and friends. The “Are You Circle Worthy?” push (alltel.atomfilms.com) promotes Alltel’s “My Circle” plan that gives subscribers free friends and family calling. All films are to center on the “Are You Circle Worthy?” theme.

Submitted videos are all to be shot on a phone, lasting between 3 and 60 seconds. The contest will award $1,000 to 10 finalists, who will have their videos posted on AtomFilms. A grand prizewinner will receive $5,000.

The proliferation of digital photography and film technology has led to a surge in user-created videos on sites like YouTube and AtomFilms. Several advertisers have sought to capitalize on this trend with contests. Recently, Panasonic sponsored a Web video contest on YouTube that solicited entertaining original animations and video. Unlike Alltel, Panasonic did not set a theme for the promotion.
