It’s said that Americans now are less trusting of major institutions. That seems not to include their opinion of major professions, though. Since 1976, Gallup has asked adults to rate the honesty and ethics of people in various professions—as very high, high, average, low or very low. The combined “very high” and “high” tally for the clergy is lower than it was before revelations of the sex-abuse scandals earlier in this decade. But many professions are scoring above their long-term averages.
