The way some big businesses are going, they’ll end up as small businesses. Their consolation is that they’ll then enjoy more public esteem than they’ve got now. An NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll this month found just 6 percent of respondents voicing “a great deal” of confidence in large corporations, with another 7 percent expressing “quite a bit.” By contrast, nearly six in 10 said they have either “a great deal” (28 percent) or “quite a bit” (30 percent) of confidence in small business.

Also scoring relatively well in the survey were such sectors as high tech (21 percent “a great deal,” 30 percent “quite a bit”) and telecommunications (13 percent “a great deal,” 25 percent “quite a bit”).
