The nice thing about a recession is that it’s easier to get reservations at restaurants. Polls in the past year have consistently found Americans putting “eating out less” atop their lists of ways in which they’re economizing. But the restaurant habit is so ingrained that there is a big difference between “less dining” and “no dining.” A Gallup survey finds many people still darkening restaurants’ doors, even if less often than they once did.

In polling fielded last month, Gallup asked adults to say how many nights they’d eaten dinner in any sort of restaurant the previous week.
