WP.com Goes Mobile

Word yesterday that Washingtonpost.com is expanding its use of SMS text messaging and integrating it into the site’s entertainment guide. The plan will allow users to send their search results to cell phones for “on the go” information.

The project also appears to include a Flickr-esque contest where people can send in their favorite cell phone camera pictures and others can vote on the best ones.

“We feel that there are tremendous opportunities currently available in the mobile space thanks to the progress of technologies like WAP, SMS and 3G,” WP.com Executive Editor Jim Brady said in the press release.

The project will be implemented by Proteus, a D.C.-based mobile technology company, that earlier this month was tapped by ABC to provide downloadable cell phone content involving the network’s shows.
