Trade Round-Up: Sept. 4, 2007

Adios Summer 2007
The summer movie season ended with a scream on the Labor Day holiday, with Dimension Film’s Halloween scaring up a surprising $31 million take, reports Variety. In today’s story, Variety writes that summer 2007 delivered an 8% upswing over summer 2004, which was the previous record frame. In other box-office news, the trade states that art-house fare didn’t post as big of returns or snag as much of the spotlight as it did in previous years like it did last summer with Little Miss Sunshine and Crash.

Dylan Pic Debuts in Venice
Todd Haynes’ experiental Bob Dylan film took to the Lido on Tuesday at the Venice Film Festival. Variety‘s Nick Vivarelli reports that while critics split on the pic – and a press screening saw some critics walking out while other journos cheered at the end credits – the film still generated positive buzz. More News at The View
Whoopi Goldberg made her debut on The View Tuesday, the same day that ABC confirmed in THR that the controversial chatfest will add a fifth co-host by year’s end. The show’s executive producer Bill Geddie said that they have a person in mind, one that may fill one of The View’s musical chairs by the time Elizabeth Hasselbeck takes maternity leave in November.
