Once, the phrase “proud parents” denoted the pride people took in their kids. Nowadays, it could as easily refer to the pride parents take in themselves. One gathers as much from a poll commissioned by The Dr. Spock Co. and excerpted in the chart below. Despite all the monstrous children one sees, just a handful of today’s parents think they’re doing a poorer job of child-rearing than their own parents did—while 41 percent believe they’re doing a superior job.
