Seven Deadly Social-Media Sins
Brian Heidelberger, a partner in the advertising and promotion law practice at Winston & Strawn, wrote a post on AdAge.com‘s TalentWorks blog in which he discussed the seven biggest risks the use of social media pose to a company.
Heidelberger’s seven deadly sins: employees, as companies may be liable for personal social-media messages; mothers, as in companies sending them free products in exchange for complimentary blogs; creativity, which often leads to false advertising; enthusiasm, in terms of posting praise for products all over the place; bureaucracy, as 87% of companies have no social-media policy; “your Draconian rules,” as in companies that go too far to the other extreme and try to “ban your employees from doing everything under the sun”; and email, which, like social-media messages, may also be subject to federal spam laws.
