The Adweek 2023 Sustainability Honoree’s advocacy replaces fear-based tactics with ‘climate optimism’

Leah Thomas has advice for the brands when it comes to sustainability: Stop grounding your strategy in the so-called shortcomings of competitors.

“Any corporation that’s making something is going to be greenwashing in some kind of way,” said Thomas, who is an author, creator and the CEO of nonprofit organization The Intersectional Environmentalist. “There are varying levels to it, but it’s about understanding that the most sustainable choice to make is not even buying from you.”

The Adweek 2023 Sustainability Honoree, who coined the term “eco-communicator” to describe her approach to digital activism, started researching and subsequently educating social media users on the link between social justice and environmentalism after noticing a lack of funding in the space.
