Hashtags are the backbone of a new test by Instagram of ways to make social movements easier to discover on its platform.

Instagram consulted with organizations including Asian Americans Advancing Justice, GLAAD, the Hispanic Heritage Foundation, Illuminative and the NAACP to select the first hashtags in the test, which include #BlackLivesMatter, #climatecrisis and #womensrights.

When people on Instagram search for one of the hashtags in the test, they will have three options to support the movement behind the hashtag:

  • Create a Fundraiser, which lets them use Instagram’s fundraiser tool on behalf of the movement.
