TikTok Halts Livestreaming, New Video Content in Russia

TikTok said over the weekend that it suspending livestreaming and new content in Russia, but its in-application messaging service was still available there.

The move came in response to a law approved last Friday by the lower chamber of Russia’s parliament, which threatened up to 15 years in prison or a fine of 1.5 million rubles ($10,824 as of Monday afternoon) to anyone found guilty of sharing false information about the country’s armed forces.

TikTok explained in a blog post, “TikTok is an outlet for creativity and entertainment that can provide a source of relief and human connection during a time of war when people are facing immense tragedy and isolation.
