Vivian Schiller will join Twitter during early January in a newly created position, head of news, leaving NBC News after two-and-a-half years of leading the network's digital division.

The move appears to be a coup for the social media giant, which will likely IPO next month. Schiller is a 25-year news industry veteran, with stops at NPR, The New York Times and CNN on her resume.

The industry vet used—what else?—Twitter to reveal her new employer in a joint, social-media announcement this afternoon.
