The Tina Dupuy Exit Interview

It's a bittersweet day here at FishbowlLA. Our beloved former Fishbowler Tina Dupuy and her wonderful, cartoonishly muscled husband are leaving Los Angeles this week to move to the fairer, media-saturated pastures of New York City. We'll miss her charm and eviscerating wit and seeing her smiling punim at otherwise horrendously dull media gatherings. But we wish her the best. And so, without further adieu, we present to you Tina's exit-from-Los Angeles interview. FBLA: Why the move? TD: I’ve been making up answers to that question mostly with gauche personal information designed to discourage any follow-ups: “My dog died.” “My best friend died.” “I’m a bad driver.” The real answer is kind of all of the above plus I’ve been going back east a lot for work. I expect to be there late summer for both conventions and a couple of other events … so living there is more economical. Yes, I’m moving to NYC because it’s cheaper. FBLA: Did you land a new gig? I couldn’t fit a new gig into my schedule. I have what are essentially three full-time jobs. I’m the managing editor at Crooks and Liars, I write a weekly newspaper column and I still freelance for magazines (which has had me on the east coast recently). I was writing about Occupy for The Atlantic. I have a profile about a presidential candidate coming out at the end of June in Mother Jones. My dance card is full. Unless you’re an editor with a two-dollar-a-word-assignment – then I have plenty of time. No problem! FBLA: You're all political. Why not DC? TD: New York is DC-adjacent. But really if DC were as big as New York with the same climate as New York, I’d totally move there. FBLA: Are you sure you're prepared to give up your house and yard for a $2,000 a month asbestos-lined roach box in a hipster-saturated outer borough? TD: You asked this as if I haven’t lived in places like that in LA. I was in Echo Park during a housing bubble/gang war: My neighbor’s house was suddenly worth a million dollars even though there was the occasional bullet riddled gangster in her yard. My place not only had plenty infestations, the 500-square foot “house” had no right angles. But I did get a 10 percent discount at American Apparel for living in the zip code. True story. But to answer your question – I’d love to find a place in New York for $2,000! FBLA: When can we expect to see you exchanging witty quips with Rachel Maddow? TD: Matt, do you have any pull there?
