With the launch of the new sites, users of mobile phones and PDAs that are Internet-enabled can take washingtonpost.com, Slate and Newsweek.com with them wherever they go, and peruse up-to-the-minute stories whenever convenient or desired. To assure a consistent and high-quality access experience, the new sites are built on WAP (wireless application protocol) technology for wireless communications whose principal application is Internet access from handheld mobile devices.

The sites, which are platform independent, are available at no additional cost to users. There is no fee or registration requirement for any content on the sites.

“As we continue to build on our suite of best-in-class integrated media offerings, we are delighted to bring these sites, and our award-winning content, to a broader market,” said Caroline Little, CEO and publisher of Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive. “We see an enormous demand for information and entertainment among an increasingly mobile public, and we are pleased to be at the forefront of meeting that demand,”

The new sites may be accessed at mobile.washingtonpost.com, mobile.slate.com and mobile.newsweek.com, respectively. Content display and formatting is optimized for handheld mobile devices to improve readability. In addition to daily editions of content from the publications and Web site, the new mobile Internet sites afford access to 14 days of archived content for Washingtonpost.com and Slate, and 30 days for Newsweek.com.

Featured content on the mobile sites — available at no additional cost or registration requirement — will include:

    · Slate: Criticism, wit and opinion with popular columns including The Explainer, Kausfiles, Today’s Blogs, Dear Prudence and much more.

    · Newsweek.com: Global perspective on politics and culture from Newsweek’s respected writers and columnists, and an early peek at the cover photo.

    · Washingtonpost.com: Breaking international, national and local news. Opinion, politics and analysis, blogs and award-winning multimedia.

Additional functionality will be added in coming weeks to include greater alert options, e-mail and additional photographic content. The launch is sponsored by Microsoft Windows Mobile.
