Layoffs Coming At The Long Beach Press-Telegram

The Long Beach Press-Telegram is closing its photo, arts & entertainment and sports departments, resulting in at least three layoffs at the small paper.

According to a letter circulated to subscribers and obtained by Belmont Shore Patch, the remaining photographers and sportswriters will be moved to another paper.

“No local photographers, sports writers and arts and entertainment writers means far less coverage of issues important to our readers and crucial for our community,” the letter read.

A “Save the Press-Telegram” facebook page was launched and then quickly taken down as management said it violated the company’s contract with its unionized employees. Under the terms of the contract, the guild is not allowed to interfere with the company’s ability to contract out work.
