Jobless Claims Tick Up Again

Weekly jobless claims rose by 7,000 to 480,000 last week, the Department of Labor reported today, but the four-week average (which smooths out fluctuations), is still improving.

California saw another big increase in initial jobless claims—those unemployed people filing for benefits for the first time—as did Georgia, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania. Even New York saw an uptick in weekly claims thanks to layoffs in transportation, construction, and the service industries.
