Joaquin Phoenix Harnesses the Media Hog

During an appearance last night on the Late Show, actor Joaquin Phoenix told David Letterman that he was having troubling mastering a yoga position known as “Harnessing of the Hog.” No such problems, though, with harnessing the media hog.

Here’s how a publicist for the actor framed, to The Independent, Phoenix’s straight-up lie to Dave about getting engaged to his yoga instructor:

“It was a joke. Joaquin has an extraordinary and spontaneous sense of humor but it is not true.”

TV Guide staff editor Sadie Gennis has a different take on Phoenix’s instantly reported latest prank, unmasked this morning on Good Morning America by George Stephanopoulos:

Fool David Letterman once, shame on you. Fool David Letterman twice, still shame on you.

If nothing else, Phoenix deserves some applause for a very delayed punchline. The set-up for this one occurred March 31, 2012, in Montauk.

The Phoenix bit also afforded Dave the opportunity for a couple of solid zingers. When Phoenix wondered if he’d done the right thing by getting engaged, Dave replied: “What are you going to do after your hog has been harnessed?” Adding, “You think your hog is harnessed now…”
