I spent 11 years at NBC, and for most of that time, Tim was my boss. He was one of the best bosses anyone could ever hope for. His passion for news and especially politics was infectious, and I caught the bug. But he was also passionate about his family, and on this Father's Day, we at "Face the Nation" send our condolences to Tim's father, Big Russ, his son Luke and his wife Maureen. We'd also like to extend our heartfelt sympathies to our good friends and colleagues at "Meet the Press." And: SCHIEFFER: By now you know that my longtime competitor, Tim Russert, died on Friday. He was just 58. Tim and I butted heads for 18 years on Sunday mornings, and yet somehow along the way we also became friends. Tim did it the old- fashioned way. He didn't need a squadron of producers and aides to get him briefed up for big interviews. He just kept up with things on a day-to-day and hour-to-hour basis, and then he did his homework. In our business, you know which of your colleagues do their own work and you know which ones don't, and somehow the public has a way of figuring that out as well. Tim was nothing fancy, no bells or whistles. He just sat them down and asked them questions, but they were always good questions. I think what made him so good was he realized that news programs are about the news; they're not about the newscasters. I think that's why he got so much news himself. Our hearts go out to Tim's wonderful family and to his father, Big Russ, on this Father's Day. I hope that they can take some small comfort in knowing so many of us respected him professionally and admired him as a person. There won't be many Sundays when I don't think about my friend, Tim Russert.
