Ex-Journalist Goes to Work for GOP Lawmaker

Say hello to yet another reporter turned flack. It’s J.P. Freire, who formerly worked as an editor for The Washington Examiner and The American Spectator. He’s now the Communications Director and Speechwriter for Rep. Mike Pompeo (R-Kansas). What kind of flack will he be — a reporter’s kind of a flack or a buttoned-up soundbite kind of guy?  “My answer: Freedom,” Freire wrote to FishbowlDC.
See his note…
Happy New Years friends!

I’m writing to let you know that I’ve taken a job at Communications Director & Speechwriter for Rep. Mike Pompeo, R-Kansas. This next Congress is going to be about reforming a big-spending nanny state, and where better to do that from the House of Representatives? My first week was a bit crazy, starting as it did during the “Fiscal Cliff” negotiations. But hey! Who doesn’t like a baptism by fire?

I’m especially excited to be working for Mike Pompeo, who has been a leading advocate of free markets and a stalwart critic of crony capitalism. Basically, I get to do the thing I’ve been doing all along, except I get to have an impact on public policy. That’s a win-win.

If you’re writing your stories about energy, aviation, special interests, or good governance, be sure to drop me a line. This office is a serious policy shop that can be very helpful.
