Damien Hirst Defaces Kate Moss for Tar's Second Issue

How do you follow a debut issue that sported a cover by Julian Schnabel? With one designed by Damien Hirst, of course. The transparency-themed spring/summer 2009 issue of Tar (as in the black stuff and an anagram of art), the art and fashion biannual started by Blackbook founder Evanly Schindler, features Hirst’s “Visible Woman” treatment of a Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott shot of model Kate Moss. The defacing makes us all nostalgic for Hirst’s “Virgin Mother,” the 35-foot-tall bronze sculpture of a naked pregnant woman that once cast a Degas-goes-to-medical-school spell over the courtyard of Manhattan’s Lever House. Beyond the cover, Tar‘s second issue includes features on Francesco Vezzoli and Philippe Starck, as well as a Terry Richardson portfolio of New York City psychiatrists in their offices.
