BLS: 247,000 Jobs Lost In July

Employment in the U.S. declined by another 247,000 jobs in July, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported today. This puts the unemployment rate at 9.4 percent, less than the 9.6 percent or even 9.8 percent predicted by some analysts, though this rate does not include discouraged workers, those who have given up searching for a job.

Once again, the only industry to add jobs last month was healthcare, which hired 20,000 people; all other sectors shed jobs.
