AP Puts Together Regional Reporting Teams

The Associated Press is developing four regional teams devoted to investigative reporting, according to a memo obtained by Editor & Publisher.

The note, from AP senior managing editor Mike Oreskes, brands the development of the news teams as a re-commitment to developing “ground-breaking, exclusive journalism that is important to millions.”

The AP plans to equip each squad with the know-how to conduct computer-assisted reporting, work with Flash, and of course do “good old-fashioned source reporting.”

The idea, said Oreskes, is to supplement stories with heavy-duty research and digital media.

It’s still unclear who’s going to helm these special reporting units. Oreskes said the new teams would begin their work “in the coming weeks.”
