TikTok released several updates aimed at protecting younger users of the video creation platform.

When people aged 16 or 17 join TikTok, their direct messaging setting will now default to “No One,” meaning that they will have to actively switch to a different sharing option in order to message other users.

People in that age group who are already on TikTok but have never used DMs will see a prompt asking them to review and confirm their privacy settings.

A popup will appear when users under 16 are about to publish their first video, prompting them to choose who can view the video, and creators can make that decision for each individual video they upload going forward.
