Yepsin: Johnny Apple Is The Father Of The Caucuses

Last night’s Charlie Rose program turned into an impromptu rememberance of legendary New York Times scribe R.W. ‘Johnny’ Apple, who died of cancer in 2006. A conversation with Des Moines Register political columnist David Yepsen veered onto the topic of Apple’s role in covering Iowa caucuses past. Rose prompted Yepsen for a remeberance of the late correspondent. ”Johnny was always a friend, showing (reporters) how to cheat on an expense account,” said Yepsin. ”Johnny is really the father of the caucuses.”
