Why Washington D.C. Gossip Sucks

It was quite a tossup today, but we’re going with The Hill‘s recent “laughter” story by Howiella Kurtz (otherwise known as Howie’s offspring, Judy Kurtz). We also could have gone with her story on lawmakers’ corny views of real versus artificial Christmas trees, but we’ll leave that alone for now.

The laughter story itself is interesting — Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.) grew angry when a Miami Herald reporter laughed during an interview about President Obama‘s foreign policy record. Diaz-Balart suggested that former Prez Bush should get some credit. The reporter laughed. The congressman accused him of being an advocate. The reporter posted the interview online with the headline, “Rule #1 for reporters interviewing Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart: Don’t laugh.”

Diaz-Balart, known for rattling on to the reporters off-the-record without really saying anything, gave Howiella an on-the-record interview. So she asks: “So does Diaz-Balart ever get the giggles?” Seriously. And his vanilla-infused response: “‘I couldn’t survive in Washington!’ he says, before letting out a bellowing laugh.”

Of course, that’s supposed to be his humanity.
