Washington is for Seersucker Lovers

There’s no easy way to say this, but seersucker should be banned. They cut the fabric into suits, shorts, shirts, skirts and robes and they’re all ugly. The light weight. The goofy stripes. The fact that it conjures up memories of that ridiculous Huckabee family photograph where all the males are in forced stripes.

To make this all a lot worse, in Washington there is “Seersucker Thursday” and it’s this Thursday as temperatures are expected to soar to a sweltering 97 degrees. To celebrate, Occidental Grill & Seafood, adjacent to the historic Willard Hotel on Pennsylvania Avenue will offer a complimentary southern cocktail or dessert (with the purchase of an appetizer). It comes with a price: You must wear seersucker.

We’re told former Sen. Trent Lott (R-Miss.), who is at least partially to blame for seersucker mania in Washington, has been informed.

Come on journos, fess up. Who among you wears seersucker? Write us at FishbowlDC@mediabistro.com or to Betsy@mediabistro.com. Better yet, send us pictures of yourselves or your coworkers in seersucker and we’ll post the best ones. A special note to  WaPo’s fashion guru Jonathan Capehart: We fully expect you to weigh in on this. What’s your official stance on seersucker?
